Mentoring Minds Cycle III | Beyond the Classroom: Developing Career Skills with Industry Experts

Learning doesn’t stop when students leave the classroom! Sometimes, the lessons that help us move forward come from a conversation with someone who has been there, learning a new skill or finding the confidence to try something different. For university students preparing to enter professional life, access to the right guidance and support can make the journey feel a little less uncertain. This is what Mentoring Minds (M2) at Orange Tree Foundation (OTF) is all about. The student mentorship programme connects students with experienced professionals, helping them explore new opportunities, develop practical skills and prepare for life beyond university. With Cycle III now complete, we’re looking back at the sessions, conversations and learning experiences that made this cycle meaningful.

From Self-Confidence to Career Readiness

Mentoring Minds Cycle III explored different aspects of personal and professional development, encouraging students to look beyond their degrees and consider the skills they need to build their futures. The cycle began with an OTF alumni motivational session, bringing the value of shared experiences into the learning environment. This was followed by Confidence-Building: The Winning Edge, a session focused on the importance of self-belief as students work towards their goals. Students also explored pathways to global scholarships and learned about financial independence. These conversations encouraged them to think about their ambitions, consider new possibilities and identify practical steps towards their goals. As the cycle progressed, the focus shifted towards career readiness. Students learned how to:
  • Build their professional presence on LinkedIn.
  • Present their skills through AI-assisted résumé writing, with useful guidance from Harvard Career Services – AI Resumes and Cover Letters.
  • Prepare effectively for job interviews.
  • Understand interview expectations through two dedicated HR Interview sessions, including one tailored specifically to the medical field.
Each session offered something different, but they all shared one purpose: helping students feel better prepared to take their next steps.
Mentoring Minds Cycle III – Learning Beyond the Classroom

Learning from Industry Professionals

Some of the most valuable lessons come from hearing directly from people who have built careers, taken risks and learned along the way. Throughout Cycle III, industry experts and mentors, including Farhan Mallick, CEO of Raftar, and Adil Azhar, Co-Founder of Leadership Adventures & Edu Pro, were among those who shared their knowledge and experiences with students. These interactions went beyond career advice. They gave students the opportunity to ask questions, explore different professional pathways and gain a clearer understanding of what to expect beyond university. By connecting students with professionals from different fields, Mentoring Minds helps make career guidance more accessible and encourages students to approach their ambitions with greater confidence. The cycle also created opportunities for students to volunteer and support session operations and participant engagement. Through their involvement, they gained practical experience in teamwork, communication, leadership and event management, showing that learning can happen both inside and outside a formal session.

The Journey Continues

At its heart, Mentoring Minds is about helping students feel more confident about their future. Whether they are exploring scholarship opportunities, preparing for their first job interview or learning how to build professional connections, every new skill and conversation can make a difference. The completion of Cycle III marks another step in the programme’s journey. Each cycle builds on previous experiences, creating more opportunities for students to learn, grow and prepare for the opportunities ahead. As Mentoring Minds looks towards Cycle IV, its purpose remains the same: to give students meaningful opportunities to learn from others, develop practical skills and explore what is possible beyond the classroom. At Orange Tree Foundation, we believe every student deserves the chance to explore their potential and work towards a future they feel hopeful about. Through Mentoring Minds, we hope to keep making that journey a little easier, one session at a time.
